Fonds consists of diary, correspondence and documents concerning Griesbach's experiences in World War I, the operations of the 49th Battalion, C.E.F. and reports, memoranda, and documents outlining the operations of the lst Canadian Infantry Brigade, C.E.F.

Griesbach, William Antrobus, 1878-1945 : William Antrobus Griesbach, lawyer and politician, born in 1878 at Qu'Appelle, Sask., was educated at St. John's College in Winnipeg.

He was called to the bar of the North-West Territories in 1901. In 1905, he was elected an alderman of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, and became mayor in 1907. After a number of previous attempts, he was elected to the House of Commons as a Unionist in 1917 and in 1921 he was appointed to the Senate.

A veteran of the South African War, Griesbach was given command of the 1st Canadian Division's cavalry squadron in 1914. Later that year, he was made Lieutenant-Colonel in command of the 49th Battalion, with which he served in France from 1915 to 1917, when he was promoted to Brigadier-General and placed in command of the 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade. He was promoted to Major-General in 1921. He is the author of Hints to Western Cavalrymen (1913) and I Remember (Toronto, 1946).
