Fonds consists of textual records, n.d., 1888-1981, including correspondence, diaries, clippings, scrapbook, speech notes and other papers, 1912-1981, relating to: Miriam (Marshall) Sheridan's involvement in women's organizations, including the Canadian Federation of University Women; her education at the University of Toronto and Victoria University, 1916-1920; and her personal and family life. Material on Sheridan's mother, Alice (Smith) Marshall (pen-name Barbara Barringer), relating to her articles, children's stories and speeches on reform and feminist issues and to her musical interests, 1888-1958. Correspondence, diaries and other papers of the Marshall and Sheridan families, including Miriam Sheridan's sister Helen Marshall, and her husband C.W. Sheridan.

Fonds also contains photographs. Two photographs, 1888-1894, are a group photograph of members of a womens' violin quartet which took part in a concert at the Conservatory of Music, Toronto, Ont., June 1888, (L-R): Misses Carden, Smith, White, Hutchinson, photograph by Simpson Bros; portrait of Miss Alice A. Smith, Mus. Bach. University of Toronto Graduation, 1894, photograph by Cochran. Eight photographs, 1940s-1973, depict Miriam Sheridan's French conversation group; activities of the University Women's Club of Ottawa and of the Canadian Federation of University Women, photographs by Van and Dominion Wide.

Sheridan, Miriam, 1897-1984 : Miriam Marshall (1897-1984) was the daughter of Alice (Smith) Marshall and the Reverend Sandford E. Marshall (1863-1924), a Methodist minister who served in churches in several cities across Canada. Miriam Marshall attended the University of Toronto and Victoria University during 1916-1920, was employed in the advertising industry in 1921, and then taught school in Toronto until her marriage in 1925 to C.W. Sheridan (1896-1981). The couple resided in Ottawa, where C.W. Sheridan practised dentistry and Miriam Sheridan was active in women's organizations, notably the University Women's Club of Ottawa and the Canada Federation of University Women.

Miriam Sheridan's mother, Alice "Lalla" (Smith) Marshall (1867-1960) was active in reform and feminist circles. She was frequently in demand as a speaker at meetings of such groups as the Woman's Missionary Society, the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, and the YWCA. Alice Marshall also published numerous articles on reform/feminist questions (often under the pen-name Barbara Barringer) and many short stories for children. She was also an accomplished amateur musician, graduating in 1894 from the University of Toronto with a Music Bachelor degree.

General note:

The series Miriam (Marshall) Sheridan - Series I was acquired in 1985 from the Canadian Federation of University Women. The remaining papers were acquired in 1987 and 1989 from Elizabeth Ruch of Ottawa, Ont.

The series Miriam (Marshall) Sheridan - Series I was acquired in 1985 from the Canadian Federation of University Women. The remaining papers were acquired in 1987 and 1989 from Elizabeth Ruch of Ottawa, Ont. The two photographs, 1888-1894 (accession 1988-014 NPC) were among the materials acquired from Elizabeth Ruch; and the eight photographs, 1940s-1973 (accession 1985-291 NPC) were acquired with the material from the Canadian Federation of University Women.
