Fonds consists of both correspondence (n.d., 1823-1853) and accounts (1817-1853), which deal almost entirely with Irving's business affairs, particularly his estates in Jamaica. The correspondence reveals the financial problems which Irving faced, while the accounts detail the operations of his sugar plantations, and his financial profits and losses.

Irving, Jacob Aemilius, 1797-1856 : Jacob Aemilius Irving (1797-1856), soldier and legislative councillor, was born in South Carolina, the eldest son of Jacob Aemilius Irving of Ironshore, Jamaica. Irving served in the 13th Regiment of Dragoons from 1814 to 1818, first as a Cornet and then as a Lieutenant. He married Catherine Diana Homfray of Glamorganshire in 1821, and emigrated with his family to Upper Canada in 1834.

J.A. Irving served on the Niagara Frontier in suppressing the rebellion in 1837. He settled in Newmarket, and was appointed first Warden of the Simcoe District in 1843. Irving also served as a Legislative Councillor from 1843 to 1856, and was a prominent supporter of Baldwin and Lafontaine.
