Fonds consists of papers reflecting the state of affairs between England and Canada in the areas of trade, marine defences, and financial interests between 1875-1880. Included are 15 items related to the dismissal by Lt. Gov. Luc Letellier in 1878 of his ministers, the dissolution of the Quebec Legislative Assembly, and a constitutional ruling of the Marquis of Lorne in 1879. Also included are letters from Lord Dufferin regarding the Pacific Railway difficulties, and Lord Lorne's appointment as Dufferin's successor; a memorandum on trade and financial interests of Canada in England, 1879; and several memoranda on Canadian defence, 1878-79. Other correspondents include Sir John A. Macdonald, Henri Gustave Joly (Premier of Quebec), Hon. J.C. Aikins, H.L. Langevin, and Col. George Denison. This material is available on microfilm reel A-1612.

Hicks Beach, Sir Michael Edward, 1837-1916 : Sir Michael Edward Hicks Beach, ninth baronet and first Earl St. Aldwyn (1837-1916) was born in London and educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. He was the conservative member for East Gloucestershire from 1864 until 1885. In 1868 Hicks Beach was appointed parliamentary secretary of the Poor Law Board and under secretary for the Home Department. In 1874, when Mr. Disraeli became prime minister for the second time, Hicks Beach was appointed chief secretary for Ireland.

When the 4th Earl of Carnarvon resigned the office of colonial secretary in January 1878, Hicks Beach succeeded him on 4 February, and served in this capacity until 1880. During the second Gladstone ministry (1880-1885) he was in opposition.
