Fonds consists of textual and microfilmed material including the papers of John Galt as follows: correspondence, accounts, estate papers, and literary manuscripts. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reels M-152, M-8081, and M-8082. Microfilm reel M-152 consists of letters and genealogical notes relating to the Tilloch and Galt families, 1788-1944. Microfilm reels M-8081 and M-8082 contain correspondence, memoranda, 1820-1837; poetry, n.d., 1831-1837; a play, 1812-1836; prose, 1806-1837; a notebook, n.d., 1812-1839; and miscellaneous, n.d., 1825-1904.

In addition, there are letters written by Galt, 1813-1839, in Scotland or England, regarding literary matters and Galt's business interests. These letters are located on microfilm reel A-2165.

Fonds also includes artistic material consisting of a watercolour landscape winter scene by Frank Houghton (fl. 1891-1925), and a portrait of a young man, possibly drawn by J. Meadows, an artist active in the 19th century.

In addition, the fonds contains a school atlas by Aaron Arrowsmith, 1838.

Galt, John, 1779-1839 : John Galt, born in 1779, was a British poet and novelist who was also involved in land speculation in British North America. In 1820 Galt became London agent for Canadians claiming compensation for losses in the War of 1812. As a Commissioner of the Canada Company after 1824, he was involved in the founding of Goderich and Guelph, and in opening up the Huron Tract. Galt later became superintendant of the British American Land Company, which attempted to develop the Eastern Townships. He married Elizabeth Tilloch in 1813. Galt died in 1839.

General note:

Artistic material was acquired from Mrs. Elizabeth MacDermot of Montréal, Quebec ca. 1974.
Microfilmed letters from John Galt were acquired from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.
The original John Galt papers at the Archives of Ontario were microfilmed and a copy of the microfilm was acquired later, in 1988, by the National Archives as part of an exchange with the Archives of Ontario.
