Fonds consists of documents related to Tory's public life from 1902-1946. There are extensive records dealing with the organization and operation of a college (Khaki University) for the Canadian Overseas forces, 1916-1923. The fonds includes subject files relating to research interests and public issues as well as correspondence and autobiographical records documenting Tory's personal life.

The fonds also contains photographs depicting activities related to the universities and colleges Tory was associated with, including Khaki College.

Tory, H. M. (Henry Marshall), 1864-1947 : A native of Nova Scotia, Dr. Henry Marshall Tory was educated at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec and ordained in the Methodist Ministry. He turned to teaching, however, and became a lecturer in mathematics at McGill in 1892. Following post-graduate work at Cambridge, England, he was appointed Professor of Mathematics in the McGill Department of Engineering. In 1905, after considerable effort, McGill College at Vancouver, British Columbia was founded with Tory as its first principal. This institution later became the University of British Columbia. He was appointed first President of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, in 1908, where he remained until 1928 except for a period of leave in 1917 and 1918 when he organized and presided over the Khaki University overseas.

Dr. Tory accepted the Chairmanship of the National Research Council in 1923, and became its first full time President in 1928. He retired in 1935 but remained active in many voluntary organizations. In 1942 he became first President and Chairman of the Board of Governors of Carleton College, now a University and held these offices until his death. Dr. Tory was a member of many learned Societies and was chairman and member of eight Royal Commissions.
