Collection consists of a log book (1829-1847), clippings (1898-1902), and other miscellaneous items relating to the Allan Line. Microfilmed material consists of a log book of sailing vessels on the Canada run, 1829-1847, most of which were under the command of Bryce Allan, microfilm reel A-518.

Allan Line (Firm) : The Allan family entered the Canadian shipping trade in 1819 from the Clyde to the St. Lawrence. In 1852, Sir Hugh Allan (1810-1882), who had entered business in Montreal, founded the "Allan Line" and gained a government contract to establish a link of screw steamers on the St. Lawrence. The steamship line later expanded to provide passenger and freight service to Great Britain, Newfoundland, South Africa and South America. In 1915 the line was absorbed by Canadian Pacific Steamships Limited.

General note:

The photocopy of the 1860 contract was presented in 1955 by Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd. The clippings were transferred in 1970 from Dr. Lamb's office. The letter and reply were acquired in 1988 from the Library of the University of Western Ontario.

Location of originals note:

Microfilm was made from items held by Mr. A.H. Allan of Leindhu, Tobermory, Mull, Scotland.
