Henderson, William, fl. 1833-1859 : William Henderson was born in the parish of Halkirk in the County of Caithness, Scotland and emigrated to Canada in 1833 where he settled in Toronto. In 1855 he was asked to be nominated for the City Council and was elected to the council for 1855 and 1856. While in council, he acted as chairman of the Committee on Fire, Water and Gas. He introduced and carried the first by-law creating a paid fire brigade. Henderson was also appointed a justice of the peace. In 1859, he was president of St. Andrew's Society but never got involved in any secret societies. In politics, he supported the policies of George Brown, Alexander Mackenzie and other liberal leaders.
