Collection consists of a return of the Dundas Militia, July 1812; return of Captain Henry Merkley's Company on duty, October 1812; return of the 1st Regiment, Dundas Militia, April 1814; and a letter to Merkley, the second-in-command, from Lieutenant-Colonel Fraser, commanding officer, ordering an immediate muster of the regiment due to a threatened attack from Sackett's Harbour, dated October 1813.

Upper Canada. Militia. Dundas : During the later half of the 18th Century and the first half of the 19th Century, the military defence of the British American provinces was provided by the British Army and the local militia. Organized on a county-basis, the militia was composed of all male residents between the ages of 16 and 60, who were liable for service. In times of peace, this was limited to an annual muster and drill, but in cases of emergency of war, such portion as deemed necessary might be enrolled for the period. At various times, provisions were made for a more systematic organization and for the recruitment of volunteers, however, universal service remained the principle. The basic units of organization for the militia were the battalion, commanded by a lieutenant-colonel, and the company, commanded by a captain.
