After his mother's early death, he was placed in the care of Dr. Stephenson's National Children's Home and Orphanage in London and sent to Canada in 1878. He spent his youth in homes in the vicinity of Chatham, Ontario, and later attended the Chatham Collegiate Institute. Following an early career as a schoolteacher and choirleader in Blenhein, Ontario, Bridle began his journalism career in Alberta with the Edmonton Bulletin, 1900-1901. He was choir leader in Edmonton as well and when he moved back to Ontario, to the Stratford Herald 1901-1903, he continued his involvement with music.
Bridle settled in Toronto in 1904, joining the staff of the News. He was associate editor of the Canadian Courier 1908-1916 and continued as editor of the Courier until 1930. He joined the Toronto Star in 1922 where he was the art, music and drama critic for more than thirty years. He became very much involved in Toronto's cultural life and was a lifelong member of the Arts and Letters Club, which he was instrumental in founding in 1908. He was a champion of the Group of Seven when its members first began exhibiting their paintings and were encountering a great deal of opposition to their work. He continued to be interested in choral music and soon after joining the Star organized a series of free "Good Music Concerts" in Toronto churches under the auspices of the newspaper.
He also directed music and choral programmes at Massey Hall. In 1927 he planned and staged a pageant, Heart of the World, as part of an international education conference in Toronto. In 1941 he was appointed general director of the Coliseum Chorus Festival.
As well as his newspaper work, Bridle published a number of books, including a collection of short studies of prominent Canadians, Sons of Canada (1916), which included portraits of politicians and artists. In 1921 he published a collection of personal reminiscences of politicians and journalists he had known, The Masques of Ottawa. He was also the author of a novel, Hansen (1924), about the experiences of a Norwegian immigrant in Ontario and Alberta.
Augustus Bridle married Martha Emily Scroggie, daughter of George Scroggie, business manager of the Mail and Empire, in 1913. They had three children.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Received in 1988 from Augustus Bridle's son George Bridle of Wellington, Ontario, and grand-daughter Liska Jetchick of Merrickville, Ontario.Vedette-matière :- Music - Canada, 1882-1985 Dr. Stephenson, 1882, 1890
