Ditmars, Douwe : Douwe Ditmars was one of a number of Loyalists whose ancestors had left Holstein, Lower Saxony to settle in Long Island, N.Y. before 1647. Loyal to the British during the American Revolution, Ditmars came to Annapolis with his wife Catherine Snediker in 1783, and was among those who received land in Clements in 1784. Douwe Ditmars was a prominent member of the new community, serving as a Commissioner of Roads in Annapolis and building several bridges in the district.
