Some of the files in volume 1-166 were arranged using the classification system established by the Canadian Council on Social Development and files from volume 167 were arranged using the current filing practices in the Library and Archives of Canada which explains the dicrepancies which may be found in the numbering of the files. The records document social services in Canada including family and child welfare, public welfare, community chests and councils, recreation, delinquency and crime.
Also included in fonds are sound recordings of meetings, conferences, seminars, and workshops of the Canadian Council on Social Development, 1931-1979, located in series entitled Conferences, seminars and workshops.
Fonds also contains photographs of of Mrs. William Tobb [ca. 1935-1940], first president of the Canadian Welfare Council, other past presidents and executive directors, staff and board members, board meetings, conferences, activities and CCSD events, located in series entitled Subject files.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Canadian Council on Social Development : The Canadian Council on Social Development is a national association of individuals and organizations concerned with social welfare in Canada. First established as the Canadian Council on Child Welfare in 1920, the name was changed in 1931 to the Canadian Council on Child and Family Welfare and in 1935 to the Canadian Welfare Council. The present name was adopted in 1971.
Permanent offices in Ottawa were obtained in 1926 and the Honourary secretary, Miss Charlotte Whitton, became the full-time executive director. Her successor in 1942 was Dr. George F. Davidson, who, on becoming deputy minister in the Department of National Health and Welfare in 1946, was succeeded by R.E.G. Davis and in 1963 by Reuben C. Baetz.
