Fonds consists of official correspondence received by James Stevenson at the Crown Timber Office, Bytown. Of particular interest are listings of bonds and deposits paid by well-known timber companies and timber merchants such as John Egan and Company, Hamilton and Low, the Wright Brothers, William Chapman and Company, Thomas McGoey and Peter Aylen. Certificates issued by crown timber agents identify the name of the timber merchant, type of wood, quantity of cut timber, and lot location. The bulk of the correspondence is from crown timber agents at Quebec City and the Upper Ottawa Valley, and from officials at the Crown Lands Office, Kingston. Included are statements of deposits and bonds collected from timber companies, enumerations of timber rafts arriving at Quebec City, enumerations of timber cut on crown lands, reports of applications for timber licences, reports of disputes arising from duties levied and timber limits granted by the Crown Timber Agent. There is some correspondence related to private financial matters of James Stevenson.
