Fonds consists of correspondence of the Alves family, 1832-1875, and an index of the letters by correspondant and by year with information on the content. The correspondence concerns the family's immigration and conditions in Upper Canada, in United States (Cincinnati) and England, the political life conditions and an agreement regarding a road. It contains letters from James and John Alves to their brother, and from Alexander Alves Sr. to his son, Alexander Alves Jr. and some other correspondants.

Alves (Family) : James Alves of Forres, Scotland, immigrated to Upper Canada in 1832. His brothers William and John soon followed, as did their father Alexander Alves and his brother-in-law Alexander Kerr. All three brothers supported William Lyon Mackenzie during the Rebellions in Upper Canada, although only William suffered imprisonment in Kingston Fort and Newgate Jail in London, and lived for a time in Cincinnati, Ohio and St. Louis, Missouri. He was pardoned with the provision he not return to Canada. James Alves returned to live with his parents at Westminster, Upper Canada in about 1839, but the other two brothers remained in the United States. Alexander Alves Jr., another brother, immigrated to England in 1834, and settled at Glastonbury.

Typescripts copies of some letters were sent by the great-grandson of Alexander Alves, Jr., John Alves, in 1975 and 1976.
