Fonds consists of microfilmed material relating to the emigration of William Peters and his family from Cornwall, England, to Hope Township, Upper Canada, prefaced by genealogical and other notes, 1940 and 1942, supplied by descendant Howard H. Finley. Included are a portrait, n.d., [of William Peters]; travel diaries of William Peters, 26 April - 9 June 1830, and his wife Elizabeth Blake Peters, 30 April - 10 July 1830; and a letter from William Peters in Hope Township, Upper Canada, to his brother Richard Peters in Berry St. Germans, Cornwall, dated 29 September 1831. This material is located on microfilm reel M-5567.

The diary of William Peters consists mainly of religious comments on his travel experiences and remarks on the sermons preached by himself and other passengers during the voyage from Plymouth to Quebec on the brig FRIENDS. Elizabeth Blake Peters' account provides an informative record of an emigrant woman's experience of travelling with three small children. She compares the circumstances of cabin and deck passengers and comments on such topics as the Captain, crew, fellow passengers, diet, drink, fishing on the Grand Bank, time changes, and weather. William Peters' letter to his brother compares conditions in Upper Canada with those in Cornwall and urges him also to emigrate.

Peters, William, 1791-1859 (family) : William Peters (1791-1859) was a farmer and Methodist preacher who emigrated, in 1830, from Cornwall, England to Upper Canada in the brig Friends, in the company of other Methodist emigrants from the same area. With his wife Elizabeth Blake Peters (ca. 1801-ca. 1894) and their three small sons, he settled at Canton in Hope Township, Durham County, where he built a Methodist church.

Received in 1982 through an exchange arrangement with the Archives of Ontario, Toronto.
The papers of Robert Nelles formerly catalogued here were transferred in 1982 to MG 24 D1 108.

Custodial history:

The typescripts from which the microfilm was made were prepared for private distribution in 1940 and 1942 by a great-grandson of William Peters, Howard H. Finley of Berwyn, Ill. Finley reproduced Peters' 1831 letter from the original which he held, and the 1830 diaries from originals held by another great-grandson of William Peters, Robert Henwood of Toronto, Ont.
