2 prints: lithographs.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of drawings by Colonel William Denny depicting camps, water falls, ships and inhabitants along waterways in Ontario and Quebec including Three Rivers, Bay of Quinte, Montmorency Falls; L'Anse a L'Eau and Cap Etenité, Saguenay, Gananoque. The drawings were done in two time periods, from ca. 1825-1843, and from 1859-1862. There are also a number of European watercolours and drawings.
Two drawings were re-attributed to one of Colonel Denny's contemporary officers, Henry James Warre, and one of Boucherville, 1845, is signed by Charles Dawson Shanly. There are also two prints in the fonds shownig Balaclava in the Crimea.
The fonds also contains correspondence and papers of Denny, 1823-1886, including a notebook containing comments on the Mingan district which is attributed to Colonel Denny, dated some time after 1857.
Also included in the fonds are 7 photographs: a view of the Citadel, Quebec, Canada East; the 71st Regiment; a group photograph, including the Prince of Wales, in Montreal, 1860; House of the Chien d'Or, Quebec; and photographic portraits of Colonel Denny, Mr. Richardson (his father-in-law); and the Most Reverend Vicar-General Mignault.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Denny, William, 1804-1886 : William Denny served in the 71st Regiment, the Highland Light Infantry, from 1823 to 1847 and rose in rank from Ensign to Lieutenant-Colonel. He served under Lord Seaton in the Canadian rebellions in 1838-1839. In 1847, he married Eweretta Richardson (d. 1874) and, through her family, inherited considerable property in the Mingan district. His second wife was Rachel Arthur (d. 1939), who later became the wife of Colonel Sir Thomas Polson.
