The fonds consists of records created by the Vanier Institute of the Family and its executive officers between approx. 1965 and 1978. It also contains materials on the Canadian Conference on the Family 1964, the Canadian Council on Urban and Regional Research 1962-1964, study papers and briefs, and numerous research studies funded by the Vanier Institute on various aspects of the family in Canada.

The fonds contains correspondence files on the administrative work of the Institute, including those of the first President of the Vanier Institute of the Family, Dr. Wilder Penfield, records of the Executive Committee, the Board of Directors, and various other committees. The fonds also contains financial records, annual general meeting files, copies of the Institute's annual reports to government, briefs, speeches, project reports, membership files, publications and press clippings.

Microfilmed copies of scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings related to the Canadian Conference on the Family 1963-1976 also form part of the fonds. These are available on microfilm reels numbers M-8639 to M-8643. See finding aid no. MSS534 for a microfilm shelf list.

Several photographs dated from 1960-1971, mostly of individuals associated with the Vanier Institute of the Family and the Canadian Conference on the Family, also form part of the fonds.

Vanier Institute of the Family : The Vanier Institute of the Family was incorporated in April 1965 as a permanent organization to promote the well-being of Canadian families, and to study their environment and characteristics in order to increase an understanding of the nature, problems, and needs of Canadian families. The aims of the Institute are carried out through education, study, and research in order to provide information and the influencing of social and economic planning through cooperation with governments, educational institutions, religious institutions, and all other appropriate public and private bodies. The work of the Institute has been approached on the widest possible interdisciplinary basis and has facilitated the carrying out of research projects and the publication of papers and reports on family issues such as marriage, parenthood, health, law reform, poverty, day care services, and the effects upon the family of changing technology.

The Institute was founded as a result of a resolution unanimously adopted at the conclusion of the Canadian Conference on the Family held at Rideau Hall and Carleton University, Ottawa, from 7-10 June 1964, under the patronage of former Governor-General Georges P. Vanier and Madame Pauline Vanier.
