Bellingham, Sydney, 1808-1900 : Sydney Bellingham was born 2 August 1808 at Castlebellingham (Republic of Ireland); the son of Sir Allan Bellingham and Elizabeth Walls. He immigrated to Canada in 1824 and spent three years travelling Upper Canada. In 1827 Bellingham went to work for timber merchant James Hamilton in Montreal. In 1831 he formed an import-export partnership in Montreal with James Wallis. Bellingham ran unsuccessfully for the House of Assembly in the riding of Montreal East in 1834. He was appointed a justice of the peace in 1837 and became very active against the Patriotes in the rebellions of that year. He was aide-de-camp to Lieutenant-Colonel George Augustus Wetherall and a captain of a detachment of the Royal Military Cavalry. In March 1840 he was admitted to the bar and became a partner of William Walker, who was also the editor of the Canadian Times. Bellingham edited that paper for a time and in 1842 became editor of the Times and Daily Commercial Advertiser. In 1854 Argenteuil County returned him to the legislative assembly. He was reelected in the election of 1857-58 but was unseated in 1860 under accusations of vote buying. Bellingham was subsequently returned in 1867 and 1871. In 1871 he became the editor of the Daily News and in 1877 became president of Lovell Publishing Company. In 1878 he gave up his seat in the assembly and returned permanently to Ireland, to the family estate which he had inherited in 1874. Bellingham died at Castlebellingham 9 March 1900.

General note:

According to family tradition, the memoirs were dictated to Bellingham's nurse about 1895 but in fact the handwriting indicates that the manuscript was the work of several people.
Received in 1955 from the Bellingham Estate. A corrected and annoted version of the memoirs was prepared in 1958 by the Public Archives of Canada.
