Fonds consists of correspondence files of Joseph Howe; subject files, including correspondence, minutes, memoranda, addresses, speeches, commissions, notes and accounts; diaries, memoranda and notebooks of Joseph Howe, originals, and photocopies, 68 pages.

The fonds also consists of a painted half-length portrait of the Hon. Joseph Howe by Alfred J. Wiggin, American portrait painter, active at Cape Anne and Boston, Massachusetts, 1850's-1870's; portrait of Joseph Howe done possibly after a photograph, by an Unknown Artist 122.

In addition, the fonds includes a photograph depicting the Hon. Joseph Howe, Secretary of State for the Provinces, July 1869.

Fonds consists of 7 maps of Newfoundland showing Bloody Bay, Content Reach, Clode Sound, Bay of Islands, St. George Bay, Bonne Bay and Cape Anguille.

Howe, Joseph, 1804-1873 : Joseph Howe, 1804-1873, journalist and politician, began work in his father's printing shop, and later became owner and editor of the Nova Scotian. As a member of the Legislative Assembly in the 1830s, he emerged as one of the province's leading reformers and played a prominent role in the campaign to obtain responsible government. During the Crimean War he endeavoured secretly to recruit men in the United States for service with British forces.

His efforts to obtain financial assistance for the construction of railways in Nova Scotia led to his appointment in 1854 as Chairman of the Railway Board, a position which he held for three years. In 1863, Howe withdrew from provincial politics and was appointed a Fishery Commissioner by the British government.

Upon his retirement as Fisher Commissioner in 1866, he became leader of the anti-Confederation movement in Nova Scotia. Having obtained "better terms" for Nova Scotia, Howe agreed to join John A. Macdonald's cabinet as Secretary of State for the Provinces in 1869. Four years later he was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of his native province but his health failed within a few weeks and he died 1 June 1873.

General note:

Most of the original papers were received in 1912 from Joseph Howe's son, Sydenham Howe, while the photocopies were received in 1954 from A.F. McCallum of Gleichen, Alberta. Additional original correspondence and miscellaneous material, found in volume 51, was received in 1982.
