Fonds consists of microfilm copies of original documents including minutes, annual reports, yearbooks, resolutions, briefs, reports, project files, subject files and scrapbooks. This material is located on microfilm reels M-8701 to M-8713. The sound recording consist of talks by Mrs. R.J. Marshall and Mrs. Allan Turner Bone about women and the Montreal Council of Women [ca. 1956-1957].

Montreal Council of Women : The Montreal Council of Women (M.C.W.) was founded in 1893. An umbrella organization of Montreal women's clubs, it has sought to represent the interests and meet the needs of women, children and the underprivileged in the Montreal area. This included setting up a National Home Reading Union, in 1895, organizing milk stations for the poor in 1911, and in 1928 establishing a Committee of Education for Pauper Children, which eventually became the Montreal Children's Aid Society.

In 1934 the council turned to purely educational work in public health and since then has studied and presented surveys on such subjects as meat inspection, mental health and day nursing. The council has campaigned for social reforms in the interest of women and children, including the improvement of working conditions for female factory workers, for the admission of women to all faculties at McGill University, and for greater legal rights for married women.

The council is affiliated with the National Council of Women and, through it, the International Council of Women.

Custodial history:

Original records were received from the Montreal Council of Women in 1974 and 1976. The textual records were microfilmed in 1993 and the originals were de-accessioned from the holdings of the National Archives of Canada. They were sent to the Archives nationales du Québec à Montréal in 1997 by signed agreement between la Ministre de la Culture et des Communications and the Montreal Council of Women / Conseil des femmes de Montréal.
