Interview by Mary Jane Miller of Eric Till, director with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, who talks about directing television drama. Till begins with an overview of drama production in Canada from 1967 to 1973, the "golden age of television drama in the regions" which was followed by a period in which series were paramount and Canadian television experienced the exodus of many talented people to Britain and the United States. He continues with discussion of the contributions of producer Philip Keatley, John Hirsch, Peter Mann, Robert Allen and others and his work on several productions such as, QUEST, OFFSHORE ISLAND (FESTIVAL), PRIVATE MEMORIES, FREEDOM OF THE CITY and MISS JULIE (FESTIVAL). Following his explanation for leaving the CBC in the 1960s, Till compares film and tape drama and his method of directing feature films. Other topics include a description of the role of producer/director in the early years of television drama and explains why the dual role was eventually split, the reaction of CBC executives to controversial topics in their programing, and the lack of "interplay" between television, film and theatre. In closing, Till outlines the characteristics of a "good" director.
