Recorded in Schumacher, Ontario. Lisi Townsend was born in Finland in 1904 and came to Canada at the age of 8. She had 2 sisters. Her first job was in 1920 working as a junior clerk in a business office for $8 a week. Later she became a telephone operator in South Porcupine making $60 per month. She discusses the conditions of work, the shifts, operating 168 lines, collecting telephone and light bills, taking orders for meter changes, calling firemen, and turning on and off the street lights. She was required to translate instructions and prescriptions for doctors to Finnish patients.
