From the Riel Rebellion of 1885 to Quebec Premier René Lévesque's 1976 Parti Québécois victory, from subsistence farming to labour strikes in Montreal, this program documents the political and social development of Quebec. Narrative by David Halton and John Buell, archival footage and photographs and sketches chart the unprecedented growth of Quebec society.~Major topics are: English-French relations in Canada from Confederation to the present; the issue of conscription during World Wars I and II; Quebec's phenomenal population growth, encouraged by church and state, and its effect on a rural, agricultural society; the predominance of the Catholic religion in all sectors of society, particularly in education; industrialization and urbanization; growing discontent among a predominantly French-Canadian workforce under English-Canadian management; the effect of The Great Depression in the 1930's; Quebec under the leadership of Maurice Duplessis; internal conflict as exemplified by labour strikes and riots during the Duplessis era (1940s and 50s) and by separatist groups such as the Rally for National Independence and the Front de Libération du Québec (FLQ) in the 1960s; the beginning of "The Quiet Revolution" under the Liberal Government of Jean Lesage in 1960; terrorist violence in the 1960s; the decline of the church, the growth of nationalism; reforms in educational and social institutions; the blossoming of the arts; the French language as a major issue; and the emergence of the Parti Québécois.~Noteworthy archival footage includes: subsistence farming, large families and religious practices in the 1920s; Montreal in the 1930s, the centre of an expanding labour force; welfare lineups in 1932; Maurice Duplessis as leader of the Union Nationale; factory workers, many of them women, during World War II; Catholic nuns providing virtually free labour in hospitals, welfare institutions and schools; a 1949 riot in the town of Asbestos; a 1957 coppermine strike in Murdochville (the first major industrial strike in Quebec to be televised); George-Henris-Henri Lévesque, a Dominican priest, whose faculty of social sciences at Laval University in Montreal nourished a new generation of reformers; René Lévesque as a television broadcaster in the 1960s; the Manicouagan Power Dam in 1962 when electricity was nationalized; Claude Jutra and his film crew; the Place des Arts in Montreal; armed soldiers in Montreal when the War Measures Act was invoked during the October Crisis of 1970; churches being torn down; the James Bay Project, symbolizing Indian, environmental and foreign control concerns; 1970 strikes by teachers, firemen and hospital employees; René Lévesque's Victory speech on 15 November 1976 when is Parti Québécois assumed power.~Archival photos include: Pierre Elliott Trudeau with Jean Marchand and Gérard Pelletier; Quebec cabinet ministers; British Trade Commissioner James Cross, kidnapped by the FLQ in October 1970; and Quebec Labour Minister Pierre Laporte, murdered by the FLQ.~Performers featured in the program are: Jean-Guy Moreau ompersonating René Lévesque; and songs with Quebec themes performed by Claude Gauthier, Gilles Vigneraultneault; Raymond Lévesque, Félix Leclerc and Monique Leyrac. <90mn>
