Item is a letter to Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy from George, 2nd Duke of Cambridge and general commander-in-chief of the British Army, dated 24 December 1875. In his letter the Duke of Cambridge praises Lord Dufferin as Governor-General of Canada and for preserving the old walls of Quebec.

Cranbrook, Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy, Earl of, 1814-1906 : Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy was born 1 October 1814 at the Manor House, Bradford, England, son of John Hardy and Isabel Gathorne. Hardy was called to the bar 2 May 1840. In 1856 he entered the House of Commons as conservative member for Leominster, which he continued to represent until 1865. He was appointed under-secretary for the home department 25 February 1858. 2 July 1866 he was appointed president of the poor law board and was sworn of the privy council. In May 1867 Hardy accepted the post of home secretary. Hardy was appointed secretary of state for war 21 February 1874. In March 1878 Hardy became secretary of state for India, a post he held until 22 April 1880. Hardy retired to the House of Lords on 11 May 1878 and was raised to the peerage as Viscount Cranbrook of Hemsted. He took his title from his country seat in Kent, and at the desire of his family he assumed the additional surname of Gathorne. He was created Earl of Cranbrook 22 August 1892. He retired from public life in 1895. Gathorne-Hardy died at Hemsted Park 30 October 1906.
