Fonds consists of seven letters from Sir John A. Macdonald to Alphonse Desjardins, relating to Senate appointment for Louis-François-Rodrigue Masson, political disposition of Quebec members, patronage, and proposed railway trackage along the Lachine canal, 1881-1891; one letter from Hon. James McDonald, Minister of Justice, to Desjardins, apparently relating to patronage, 1879.

Desjardins, Alphonse, 1841-1912 : Alphonse Desjardins was born in Terrebonne, Canada East and educated at Masson College and Séminaire de Nicolet. He was called to the bar in 1862 and practised law in Montreal, 1862-1868. He was editor of L'Ordre du Nouveau Monde, and was president of Banque Jacques-Cartier, Montreal Terra Cotta Lumber Co., and Crédit-Foncier de Bas-Canada. He represented Hochelaga in the House of Commons, 1874-1896, and served as Minister of Militia and Defense, 1896, and Minister of Public Works. He sat in the Senate, 1892-1896.
