Hudson's Bay Company : Governor-in-Chief, Hudson's Bay Company

George Simpson was born ca. 1786-1787 in the parish of Loch Broom, Scotland. An illegitimate child, he was raised and educated by his aunt, Mary Simpson, and entered commercial life with his uncle Geddes Mackenzie Simpson in the London sugar brokerage of Graham and Simpson. There, Simpson came under the eye of Andrew (Wedderburn) Colvile, a member of the Hudson's Bay Company Committee who, in 1820, arranged for Simpson to be named Governor-in-Chief (locum tenens) in the event that Governor William Williams should be arrested as a result of his conflict with the North West Company.

When the two companies united in 1821, Simpson was named Governor of the Northern Department. Five years later, his authority was extended to include the Southern Department. As governor, he presided over the integration of the North West Company into the new Hudson's Bay Company and supervised the development of trade on the Pacific Coast, bringing his scrutiny and organizational acumen into all areas of the company's trade. As a reward for his achievements, he was made Governor-in-Chief in 1839 and was knighted in 1841. Simpson died in 1860 at his headquarters at Lachine, Lower Canada.
