Hudson's Bay Company : Governor-in-Chief, Hudson's Bay Company

William Mactavish began his career with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1833, as a clerk. By 1858, he had risen to the position of Chief Factor of Fort Garry and in 1864, succeeded Alexander Grant Dallas as Governor-in-Chief of Rupert's Land.

Mactavish attempted to defend the company's position in the district against agitation from groups advocating annexation to the United States and others promoting union with Canada. Visiting Ottawa in 1869, he failed to convince Sir John A. Macdonald of the seriousness of the deteriorating situation in the settlement. After conferring with senior company officials in London, Mactavish returned to Red River to secure orderly access for the Canadian officials in preparation for the transfer of authority to Canada. However, he failed to pacify the Métis led by Louis Riel and by 1869, Mactavish's authority had been hopelessly compromised. He became a virtual prisoner of Riel and his followers until after the rebellion.

In failing health, Mactavish retired to England in 1870 where he died soon after.
