The fonds consists of textual records, photographs and audio-visual material of the Canadian Federation of University Women which document its role representing the interests of university-educated women in Canada and advocating on their behalf at the local, national and international levels. The fonds provides evidence of its work promoting advanced research by women, supporting public education in Canada, protecting and advancing the status of women, participating in the International Federation of University Women, and attempting to influence public policy on issues of concern to women.

Canadian Federation of University Women : The Canadian Federation of University Women was founded in 1919 under the leadership of Margaret McWilliams of Winnipeg to promote the interests of women with higher education at local, national and international levels. It is a voluntary, non-profit, self-funded organization with a membership of over 10,000 university-educated women and 122 local clubs. The CFUW promotes high standards of public education; encourages advanced study and research by women university graduates; encourages active participation in public affairs by qualified women; works to safeguard and improve human rights and the economic, legal and professional status of women in Canada; and participates in the work of the International Federation of University Women.

The CFUW accomplishes its mission at the national level by advising the Government of Canada of CFUW policies on education, human rights, the status of women, justice, social and environmental issues; providing members with opportunities to network at regional, national and international meetings; and granting funds for fellowships for graduate studies, awards for studying creative arts at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, and awards to stimulate reading by children, administered in partnership with Library and Archives Canada. At the local level, its clubs hold meetings on educational and cultural issues with an emphasis on the status of women and girls; research and present resolutions for discussion and approval at the CFUW Annual General Meeting; and ensure that local Members of Parliament and Members of Provincial Parliaments are aware of CFUW policies.

General note:

Received between 1974 and 2016 from the Canadian Federation of University Women.

Arrangement note:

The subject files in volumes 1 to 25 were reorganized in 1997 and 1998 by Ruth Bell and Mary McLaren, representatives of the Canadian Federation of University Women. The records acquired in 2002, in volumes 71 to 105, were arranged by Olenka Galadza for the CFUW. The 1988 and 1991 accessions of textual records were arranged and described in 2006 by Library and Archives Canada as volumes 106 to 137.
