Mrs. Russell Stephenson, sister to Lady Dufferin, is dressed in a costume of the same period as Lady Dufferin (King James V of Scotland) for a fancy dress ball hosted by Lord and Lady Dufferin on February 23, 1876.

A description of her costume in the Toronto Globe on February 24th, 1876 (pg 3) reads: "She wore a white satin petticoat, under a pale blue satin train, which was trimmed with two rows of silver lace, a high waist, and sleeves of white satin puffed with blue satin, edged with silver; long hanging sleeves of blue satin lined with white and emboridered with silver, tassels of silver bullion round the waist, a handsome silver gridle, with large bullion tassels, a small hat of white satin, bound with blue, and a white plume with diamond ornaments."

Although the Earl of Dufferin's Grand Fancy Ball took place on February 23, 1876, photographs of costumed individuals and groups were taken after the event itself. While the majority were taken in February and March, some of the guests were also photographed in April.
