The series consists of speeches and publications written by Gordon Robertson, including his book, Memoirs of a Very Civil Servant: Mackenzie King to Pierre Trudeau, published in 2000. The speeches (some are in published format, others are simply notes in point form) were given between 1953 and 2005, on topics such as the Canadian North and its industries, difficulties and future, the Privy Council Office and its role, Canadian Federalism, the workings of government, Federal Provincial Relations, access to government documents, Constitutional issues, and tributes to retiring colleagues. The speeches were given at convocations, dinners, conferences and to groups such as the American Society of International Law, the Institute of Public Administration, and the Law Society of Upper Canada. The files concerning A Very Civil Servant contain drafts of the book, correspondence with friends, advice and criticism on chapters, copies of photos used for illustrations, and reviews.
