Fonds consists of letters from Tyler to his wife and mother, written during inspection tours and business trips in North America, 1867-1893, covering such topics as supervision on the construction of the International Bridge at Niagara and the St. Clair Tunnel, and negotiations with American railroads; letters from Tyler to Mr. Renton, Secretary of the Grand Trunk, 1890-1893; letters from Tyler's son to Lady Tyler; and a collection of letters from Tyler's father-in-law, Major-General C.W. Pasley, to Pasley's son on duty with the British Army in Canada, 1847-1849, containing references to telegraphic procedure, equipment, and the Rebellion Losses Bill.

Also included in the fonds is a photographic portrait of Sir Henry Tyler, dated April 1880.

Tyler, Henry Whatley, Sir, 1827-1908 : Sir Henry Whatley Tyler was born in England and trained as a soldier at Wedwith. Between 1853 and 1870 he was an inspector of railways for the British Board of Trade, and chief inspector from 1870 to 1877. In 1877 he was knighted, and became president of the Grand Trunk Railway Company. He held this position until 1895; and for the period 1880-1892 he was also member of Parliament for Harwick and Great Yarmouth.
