The series consists primarily of correspondence and memoranda, but also contains other pertinent documents, either enclosed with letters to McLuhan or relating to a specific individual or event. These include circular letters, broadsides, newsletters, manuscripts, published articles and offprints, brochures, transcripts and clippings. The Series is arranged in four sub-series: the nominal correspondence (4.870 m, volumes 18-42); fan and crank mail (0.190 m, volumes 42-43); invitations (1.760 m, volumes 43-52); and recommendations correspondence (0.450 m, volumes 53-55).

The nominal correspondence is arranged alphabetically by correspondent. The fan and crank mail is arranged chronologically. The invitations to lecture are organized in two parts. Part One is arranged chronologically by event. Many of these files contain manuscripts or speech notes. The second, more general, part is also arranged chronologically. Included in this part is correspondence relating to declined invitations. All of these files may contain, in addition to correspondence, programmes, agenda, publicity material and conference material. The final sub-series of the Correspondence Series is the recommendations correspondence, which contains documents relating to employment and grant applications. Many files also contain abstracts of research projects or proposals. Also available on microfilm reels H-2055 to H-2082.

Oversize posters and honorary degrees are held in volume 226.
