Subject depicts the battle at Cut Knife Creek, Saskatchewan on May 2, 1885, at 12:30 p.m. In the foreground are three men, with two tending the cannon. The third man has his back to the viewer and appears to be looking through binoculars at the battle. In the middle ground, soldiers are walking through the brush toward the lower right of the scene. Several soldiers are visible on the hill., Sotheby's inventory no. W500., Item is attached to a secondary support, which is hinged to a window mat. On the back of the secondary support are three newspaper clippings and part of a photograph. On clipping refers to the funeral of Miss Wadmore. Another clipping is a poem entitled After Death. The third clipping refers to an endowment to a hospital by the children of Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Wadmore. The partial photograph is a black and white image of two graves. The inscription on one grave is readable and someone wrote a caption under the image on the secondary support. The inscription reads: Grave of Captain Hebden / Essex Regt. / South Africa died 1900

General note:

The Battle of Cut Knife was fought on May 2, 1885. It occurred when a small force of Cree and Assiniboine were attacked by 325 troops composed of North-West Mounted Police, "B" Battery, "C" Company, Foot Guards, Queen's Own and the Battleford Rifles led by Lt. Col. W.D. Otter. The Cree and Assiniboine defeated the Canadian forces, with losses on both sides.
The North-West Rebellion (or North-West Resistance) was a five-month insurgency against the Canadian government, fought mainly by the Métis and their First Nations allies.
