Fonds also consists of correspondence, 1836-1841 and photocopy, 1838, 4 pages: a letter from Thomson making arrangements for extended vacation, 1836, 1 page, (received in 1966 from Alfred Goodman of New York, through the Prime Minister) ;a letter from Lord Melbourne concerning Lord Durham's resignation, photocopy, 1838, 4 pages, (copied in 1962, typescript also available); a letter from Sir George Arthur regarding Arthur's return to England, 1840, 2 pages; and letter from Isaac Buchanan regarding events in the Legislative Assembly, 1841, 8 pages.
Fonds also includes a patent for the Barony of Sydenham and Toronto, Aug. 19, 1840.Biography/Administrative history:Sydenham, Charles Poulett Thomson, Baron, 1799-1841 : Charles Poulett Thomson, Baron Sydenham of Sydenham and Toronto, colonial governor, was a member of the British Commons from 1826 to 1839, during which time, he served as Vice-President of the Board of Trade and Treasurer of the Navy. In 1840, he was appointed Governor-in-Chief of Upper Canada and New Brunswick in succession to Lord Durham, to implement the union of the Canadas. He died in Kingston, Canada West, after a fall from his horse in 1841.Additional information:General note:Received at various times from 1962 to 1966.
