Fonds consists of a F.X. Sadlier correspondence album including 208 letters from Sadlier to his mother, Mrs. James Sadlier, 1867-1885; writings of Anna T. Sadlier, n.d., 1885-1914, 1922; Chadwick Family, a genealogical study by Francis Chadwick, ca. 1931; and Francis Chadwick pocket diaries, 1900-1930.

Fonds also includes unidentified portraits, probably of members of the Sadlier and Chadwick families, by British, American and Canadian photographers; a portrait of D'Arcy McGee, aged 38, by Ellisson & Co., Quebec; and a view of Montreal, a carte-de-visite size business promotion card by Alexander Henderson, Montreal.

Sadlier-Chadwick (family) : Mary Ann (Madden) Sadlier was born in 1820 at County Cavan, Ireland and died in 1903 at Montréal, Que. She immigrated to Canada ca. 1830 and in 1846 married James Sadlier (d. 1869) of the firm D & J. Sadlier & Co., Publishers, Booksellers and Stationers, Montreal, Boston, New York. They had several children including Anna Teresa, Francis Xavier (1852-1885), and Margaret. Mrs. Sadlier and her daughter Anna Teresa had careers as minor authors, specializing in Irish Catholic and French-Canadian themes respectively. They were, nonetheless, among the few commercially sucessful Canadian writers of the pre-1888 period. James Sadlier was also the New York publisher of Thomas D'Arcy McGee, who was a family friend.

Although Mrs. Sadlier pursued her career largely in New York after 1850, the family maintained strong ties with Canada. Her daughter Anna was educated in Montreal and lived subsequently in Ottawa. After completing his studies in New York, Francis Xavier Sadlier entered St. Joseph's House of Probation in Montreal, in preparation for entry into the Society of Jesus. He left in 1875, and after further studies in Europe and Massachusetts was ordained in 1885. He died shortly thereafter. Margaret Sadlier married Francis Chadwick (b. 1849) in Montreal in 1880. A native of Ireland, Chadwick was Deputy Clerk of the Crown in Chancery, House of Commons, during at least the period 1900-1930. Anna T. Sadlier resided with the Chadwicks in Ottawa between 1911-1919.
