The collection contains original and copied photographs depicting the life and career of General A.G.L. McNaughton, including photos of his family, ancestors, friends, his public and military activities, and a photograph of a portrait of McNaughton done by K.S. Brydone-Jack, n.d., 1861-1967.
The collection contains sound recordings of interviews, speeches and documentaires relating to the General in his various functions, 1950-1966. Also included are newsreels from the Canadian Army Film Unit, 1942-1943.Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :McNaughton, A. G. L. (Andrew George Latta), 1887-1966 : Andrew George Latta McNaughton, born in 1887 at Moosomin, Sask., graduated in engineering from McGill University. Beginning as an artillery officer in World War I, McNaughton became Chief of the General Staff during the inter-war years. Co-inventor of the cathode ray direction finder in 1923, he became President of the National Research Council in 1935.
He served as Commander, First Canadian Army Overseas in World War II, Minister of National Defence, November 1944 to August 1945, Canadian representative on the United Nations, President U.N. Security Council, Chairman of the Permanent Joint Board of Defence (Canadian Section), and Canadian chairman of the International Joint Commission. Following his retirement from I.J.C. in 1962, McNaughton waged a fight against the existing terms of the Columbia River Treaty until his death.
