Fonds consists of the literary and personal correspondence of Canadian writer Lucy Maud Montgomery, 1903-1941, and some of the literary works of Scottish writer and journalist, George Boyd MacMillan, including some personal correspondence, 1903 and 1951. Included is documentation regarding the acquisition of the records, written by Mollie Gillen, London, England, 1974. The fonds also contains photographs showing George B. MacMillian in his garden at Alloa, Scotland, ca. 1925 and photographs of his home on Prince Edward Island, ca. 1925, ca. 1940.

MacMillan, G. B. (George Boyd), 1881-1953 : George Boyd MacMillan, author and journalist, was born in Alloa, Scotland, in 1881. After working for nine years as a printer, he joined "The Alloa Journal" in August 1904 as a reporter and remained with the newspaper until his retirement in 1946. MacMillan contributed poems and articles to various periodicals and corresponded with literary friends, including Lucy Maud Montgomery. He died in Alloa, Scotland, in 1953.

Montgomery, L. M. (Lucy Maud), 1874-1942 : Lucy Maud Montgomery, was born and raised in P.E.I., where she lived until her marriage in 1911 to the Rev. Ewan Macdonald, when she moved with him to Ontario. She began her writing career on Prince Edward Island, writing for Canadian and American children's magazines, and published her first novel, Anne of Green Gables, which was to bring her international fame, in 1908. Anne of Green Gables was published by L.C. Page and Company of Boston, Mass., who published another seven of her books before she left them in 1917. In 1919, after suing L.C. Page for royalties owing, L.M. Montgomery entered into an agreement with the firm for one last book, an agreement which resulted in another court battle over the book, Further Chronicles of Avonlea. L.M. Montgomery published some twenty books during her lifetime and was awarded the O.B.E. in 1935. She died in Toronto.

The original Lucy Maud Montgomery letters were received in 1974 from George McMillan, nephew of George Boyd MacMillan, Clackmannan, Scotland. Container 3 was received in 1974 from Mollie Gillen of London, England.
