He remained in Norway until April, 1940, when Germany invaded that country. He fled to Britain, where he was interned. In June 1940, he and other British internees were shipped to Canada. In Canada, he remained in internment until November 1943, when the internment camps were closed. He was sent back to Britain, where he worked as a bookkeeper. Becoming a British citizen in 1949, he returned to Canada in 1950. Interested in history, he read widely in the field and in the meantime worked at a variety of odd jobs, be this as taxi driver or any other. "Faith and Utopia in the Twentieth Century", an unpublished manuscript, which includes observations on his own experiences as emigré and internee, is the product of his historical research.
