The latter includes the bench book or record of sittings for 1845 of Sir Jonathan Frederick Pollock, lord chief baron of the exchequer of Great Britain from 1844 to 1866. The correspondence includes eleven letters to him from British lawyers, judges, and politicians, including one letter from Sir Robert Peel, Prime Minister of Britain. Short typescript biographies of the correspondents are enclosed with the letters. Further correspondence consists of three letters to Ernest Murray Pollock (Viscount Hanworth), grandson of Sir Jonathan Frederick Pollock, and an envelope addressed to George Pollock, probably the father of Ernest Murray Pollock.
In addition, there are writs, jury lists and other legal documents relating to four English common law actions. The individuals concerned in the actions were Samuel Long, William Swann, William Cobbett, John Hudson, James Hackett Hodsoll, James Dadson, and Thomas Ford.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Pollock, Jonathan Frederick (family), 1783-1870 : Sir Jonathan Frederick Pollock was born 23 September 1783 in England, the son of David Pollock and Sarah Parsons. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, receiving a BA in 1806 and an MA in 1809. Pollock was called to the bar in the latter year and practised law until he was elected to Parliament in 1831 for the borough of Huntingdon. He served as attorney-general from 1834 to 1835 in Sir Robert Peel's first cabinet and resumed this office in Peel's second government from 1841 to 1844. In the latter year, Pollock was appointed lord chief baron of the exchequer and held this office until his retirement 1866. He was made a baronet in that year and died 23 August 1870 at Hatton, Middlesex County. Pollock married twice: Frances Rivers in 1813 and Sarah Langslow in 1834, and had eighteen children by his two wives. "Dictionary of National Biography"
Hanworth, Ernest Murray Pollock, Viscount, 1861-1936 : Ernest Murray Pollock was born 25 November 1861 at Wimbledon, England, the son of George Frederick Pollock and Frances Herbert, and the grandson of Sir Jonathan Frederick Pollock. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and was called to the bar in 1885. He was elected to Parliament in 1910 for Warwick and Leamington and held the seat until 1923. E.M. Pollock was appointed solicitor-general in 1919 and became attorney-general in 1922. After his departure from Parliament, he was made a baronet and named master of the Rolls (with responsibility as custodian of records) in 1923. Pollock was raised to the peerage in 1926 as Baron Hanworth and was advanced to Viscount Hanworth in 1936. He had resigned the mastership of the Rolls in 1935 due to failing health and died 22 October 1936 at Hythe, Kent County. Pollock married Laura Helen Salt in 1887 and they had two children.
