The fonds consists of manuscripts of George Faludy's poetry and prose, including his work entitled MY HAPPY DAYS IN HELL, in which he recounts his imprisonment under the Hungarian communists from 1950 to 1953.

Faludy, Görgy, 1910-2006 : Poet, novelist, translator, publicist and scholar, George (Gyorgy) Faludy was born in Hungary in 1910. He attended university in different centres, including Vienna (1928-1930), Berlin (1930-1931), Paris (1931-1932), Graz (1933-1934), and Bologna (1934-1935). His liberal translation of Villon's ballads in 1937 and the ensuing publicity gained him some recognition in literary circles. In 1938, he settled in Paris, later moving to Morocco. On the invitation of President F. Roosevelt, he emigrated to the United States in 1941. Here he enlisted in the US Army, serving in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945.

Faludy returned to Hungary in 1946, where he worked as literary editor of NÉPSZAVA (VOICE OF THE PEOPLE), a Hungarian daily. However, he ran afoul of the authorities and was imprisoned. He spent three years in the Recsk labour camp. Several years after his release, he was permitted to leave Hungary. After a brief stay in Paris, he settled in London, England, where he edited IRODALMI UJSAG (LITERARY GAZETTE) from 1957 to 1962. At the same time, he presented lectures in Sweden, Denmark and Iceland. In 1967, he emigrated to Canada, where he settled in Toronto. By that time, he was already writing full time. At the same time, he worked as a visiting lecturer at different universities, including Columbia, the University of Philadelphia and the University of Toronto, which in 1978 granted him an honorary Doctorate of Law degree. Following the demise of communism, Faludy again returned to Hungary, where, in 1988, he settled in Budapest until his passing in 2006.
