Kallmann, Helmut, 1922-2012 : Born in Berlin, Germany, in 1922, Helmut Kallmann moved to England in 1939 where he briefly pursued formal piano and theory studies before being interned in 1940 because of his German citizenship. During 1940-1943 he was interned in Canada, and in Toronto in 1944 he returned to his piano studies, graduating from the University of Toronto in 1949 as a Bachelor of Music. Kallmann's career as a music librarian began in 1950 when he joined the CBC Toronto Music Library, and in 1962 he became supervisor of that library. His research interest in Canadian music history, which began during his time at the University of Toronto, continued and expanded during his tenure at the CBC. Kallmann revised, edited, and added historical content to the 1952 edition of the CBC's Catalogue of Canadian Composers, and in 1960 his pioneering A History of Music in Canada 1534-1914 was published, the first book-length treatment of that subject. Kallmann's research and writings were a major source of data for the first edition of the Encyclopedia of Music in Canada, for which he was one of three co-editors. In 1970 Kallmann was chosen as the first chief of the newly founded Music Division of the National Library of Canada (NLC). At the NLC, Kallmann oversaw the development of a comprehensive national collection of library and archival materials on the history of music in Canada and the mounting of exhibitions on major figures, such as Healey Willan and Glenn Gould. Kallmann was active in numerous music and library organizations and journals, including the Canadian Music Library Association (co-founder and chairman), Canadian Association of Music Libraries (CAML), International Association of Music Libraries (Canadian delegate), Canadian Musical Heritage Society (co-founder), Canadian Music Council (director and vice president), Canadian Music Journal (editorial board), and Canada Music Book (editorial board). As a widely published and leading authority on Canadian music history, Kallmann often contributed to international music reference works by adding to or correcting their Canadian content. His honours and awards include an honorary doctorate from the University of Toronto (1971), the Canadian Music Council Medal (1977), Member of the Order of Canada (1986), a festschrift on his 1987 retirement from the NLC, and the naming of CAML's distinguished service award in his honour in 2000.
