The collection is comprised of several scrapbooks, programmes and photographs documenting the Canadian Repertory Theatre of Ottawa, Ont. Scrapbooks and additional records cover the years 1949 to 1956.

Provost, Gilles, 1938- : Gilles Provost, stage actor and director, artistic director, drama teacher born January 21, 1938, in Montcerf, Québec. He was notably the artistic director and stage director of Le Théâtre de l'Ile, based in Hull (Gatineau), Québec (1976-2008). He was also active as artistic director, director, performer with Théâtre Ferme Lipial from 1993 to 1996 (Ripon, Québec), Théâtre des Lutins from 1971 to 1981 (Vanier, Ontario), L'Atelier from 1969 to 1972 (Ottawa, Ontario), Théâtre du Pont-Neuf from 1962 to 1964 (Hull, Québec), Théâtre de la Colline from 1960 to 1962 (Ottawa, Ontario), Dévôts de la Rampe from 1958 to 1959 (Hull, Québec) as well as la Compagnie Gilles Provost.

In the 1960's, Provost was a jury member of the Consultative Committee on Theatre for the future National Arts Centre. He was also a member of numerous funding jurys within the ministère des Affaires culturelles du Québec. He has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee medal (1977) and Golden Jubilee medal (2002), as well as the Hommage des Culturiades prize (2003), the Théâtre Le Droit prize (1993 and 2002), the Capital Critics Circle Special Jury prize (2007), the Mérite Municipal prize, Citizen's category, from the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l'Occupation du territoire (Québec) in 2016. He was named "Personality of the Year" by Radio-Canada and Le Droit in 2006 for the Arts and Culture sector.

Original documents donated to Library and Archives Canada by Gilles Provost in August of 2019.
Scrapbooks, press clippings, photographs in this collection also document the participation of reknowned Canadian stage actors with the CRT such as Amelia Hall, William Hutt, William Shatner, Araby Lockhart, Christopher Plummer, Donald Davis, Barbara Chilcott, David Gardner.
Gilles Provost closely followed the activities of the CRT in the 1950's. He appeared in the role of the second sergeant in the CRT's production of "Tartuffe" in 1953.
