The fonds also contains photographs which depict scenes of trips to Hudson Bay, Labrador, and northern Quebec by Olaus J. Murie including views of settlements, Inuit, and camps.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Murie, Olaus Johan, 1889-1963 : Olaus J. Murie, biologist, was first employed by the Oregon State Games Commission from 1912-1914. From 1914-1917, he was field Naturalist and Curator of Mammals for the Carnegie Museum at Pittsburgh. During this period, he made his two expeditions to Canada, to Hudson Bay in 1914-15 and across the Labrador Peninsula in 1917. During the First World War, he served as a balloon observer. In 1920, he joined the U.S. Biological Survey where he served until 1945. He undertook many wildlife studies during this period. He became Director of the Wilderness Society in 1945 and was President from 1950 to 1957.
During his career Murie wrote a number of natural history books, including The Elk of North America 1951, A Field Guide to Animal Tracks in 1954 and Alaska- Yukon Caribou in 1935. He received many awards from conservation bodies, a few of which are the Audubon Medal in 1959, the John Muir Award of the Sierra Club in 1963 and the Conservation Award of the American Forestry Association in 1955.Additional information:General note:Photographs previously known as the Margaret E.
