Christopher Patrick John O'Kelly was awarded the Victoria Cross for his leadership during the Battle of Passchendaele, in October 1917, when he led his unit in the capture of several pillboxes, numerous prisoners, and later helped repel a counter-attack. He had already been awarded the Military Cross for actions near Vimy Ridge in September. He is photographed near the front lines wearing a leather jerkin over a uniform with the rank cuffs of a Lieutenant. He and two soldiers are standing in a ruined section of trench, with a destroyed structure in the background.
